Lecture by prof. Magdalena Banaszkiewicz

November 28, 2022 at 5:30 pm on the Microsoft Teams platform will be held the next expert seminar with prof. Magdalena Banaszkiewicz from Jagiellonian University, Poland entitled "Post-totalitarian, post-nuclear, or post-colonial? Critical discourse on the legacy of Chornobyl".

New date: 5.12.2022

Abstract: The aim of the talk is to present the case of the legacy of Chornobyl from the perspective of critical heritage studies. The 50th anniversary of the adoption of the ‘Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage’ by UNESCO provides an excellent starting point to reflect on the timeliness of its message and contemporary trends in heritage studies and the practice of protecting, and developing heritage as a universal resource of humanity. The ongoing war in Ukraine has further intensified the discussion on the geopolitical dimension of nuclear heritage and the international community’s responsibility towards it. The talk will pose questions about both the future of sites such as the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone and a broader reflection on the presence of post-totalitarian heritage in academic discourse and everyday practice.
